An epic American space opera franchise created by filmmaker George Lucas. It is a science fiction and fantasy story set in a faraway galaxy.

The saga began with the release of the "original trilogy", consisting of A New Hope in 1977, The Empire Strikes Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in 1983.

Because of its huge success across the world during the late 70s, several Japanese anime and manga from that era were heavily inspired by it.

A "prequel trilogy" (set chronologically before the original trilogy) was released in 1999, 2002 and 2005. The trilogy consists of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. After the series rights were sold by Lucas to Disney, a new "sequel trilogy" was announced in 2012. This trilogy began with The Force Awakens in 2015 and continued with The Last Jedi in 2017 and The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

Several animated series related to the main saga were also released. Among them was Star Wars: Clone Wars in 2003, Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2008, Star Wars: Rebels in 2014 and Star Wars: Resistance in 2018.

Two spin-off "Star Wars Anthology" films were released between each sequel film. The first Anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, was released in 2016 and is set in the period of the Galactic Civil War of the original films. A film focusing on Han Solo called Solo: A Star Wars Story was released in 2018.

A live action series called The Mandalorian and a video game called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order were also released in late 2019.

The Star Wars saga has had a significant impact on popular culture; is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time.
