She has long brown hair tied to a ponytail, multiple cherry blossoms in her hair, and large breasts.

Her default outfit consists of a white shirt with shoulder cutouts and a red sailor collar, yellow neckerchief, grey collar with a kikumon, a "Z" signal flag armband, red pleated skirt with hip vents, mismatched black socks (knee-length on her right, thighhigh on her left), AP shells on her thigh straps, and grey high-heeled rudder footwear. She also uses Type 91 AP shell caps as breast pads as shown in her damaged arts.

Her rigging consists a headpiece containing her two Type 21 radars, and two large hull pieces in a half-circle and held by a funnel to her back, containing all three of her 46 cm triple gun mounts and either four triple 155 mm triple gun mounts (base) or two triple 155 and six 127 mm twin anti-aircraft guns (kai). She also uses a red oil-paper umbrella patterned off her real-life tripod mast.

Because the historical Yamato had a career mostly based around impressing people, Yamato is often depicted as a shy and soft-spoken housewife. Yamato was historically referred to as the Hotel Yamato, due to her relatively luxurious quarters and the fact that she was never used in combat until late in the war, when defeat was certain.

Yamato only fired her massive 460 mm guns in battle once during the Battle of Samar to finish off Gambier Bay. This is the only confirmed kill of Yamato during her entire career. She was sunk on 7 April 1945 during Operation Ten-gou, in which she was bombarded with dozens of bombs and torpedoes before being sunk off southern Kyushu.
