The seventh game in the Dragon Quest series, and the first to appear on a non-Nintendo console (the PlayStation 1). It was released in 2000 in Japan, with an English version published in North America a year later. An enhanced remake for the Nintendo 3DS was published in Japan in 2013.
It was the first game in the series to be released in America since the fourth, and it would be the last to be released in that market under the Dragon Warrior title.
