yoke (clothing)
A shaped piece of fabric that is sewn to the upper portion of a garment, typically over the shoulders and chest/back. It serves to provide shape, improve fit, control fullness, and can also be a significant design element. Think of it as the "shoulder and upper chest/back area" of a garment being constructed as a separate, often shaped, piece rather than just a continuation of the main body fabric.
