yatate
A Japanese writing set with a carrying box. It was designed for portability and convenience.
The first yatate were long boxes, with the ink compartment in the axis of the pen; later on, the 'smoking pipe' design became popular.
The yatate can also be equipped with a chain, enabling it to be latched onto an obijime as a type of netsuke (obijime accessory).
