uberleben (racehorse)

ユーバーレーベン シロイアレノムスメ

German: "Survival"

Real-life Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. Sired by Gold Ship and foaled by Meine Theresia. She is well known for being the winner of the 2021 Yushun Himba (The Oaks) as well as her rivalry with Sodashi, the first true white horse to have won a G1 race and winner of the 2021 Oka Sho (1000 Guineas).

Uberleben is a brown (read: almost black) mare with a small, white diamond-shaped "star" on her forehead and a coronet on her right back leg. In her racing prime, she was almost always seen wearing a blue hood with a white "T" on the forehead section, an item shared by many horses trained by Tezuka Takahisa (and no, the "T" is not short for "Trainer").

At the time of the 2021 Shuka Sho, the third crown race for fillies, Gallop (a horse racing magazine) played the Sodashi/Uberleben rivalry with a "White vs. Black" frontpage. However, neither won the race. Akaitorino Musume (effectively "Red") became the winner of the third crown. Akaitorino Musume ("Daughter of the red bird", i.e. of Apapane) is also the reason for her strange nickname of "Shiroiare no Musume" ("Daughter of the white thing").

She retired in March 2023 due to a bowed tendon and became a broodmare at Big Red Farm alongside her sire. After a failed attempt with Benbatl in 2024, her first child was born on February 25th 2025, a colt with a star-and-snip marking sired by Equinox. Unsurprisingly, the child has the parents' shared coat color (brown) but he is also notable for his T-shaped star marking.
