Slightly larger than the European robin. It is plain brown above with a strong white eyebrow and a distinctive black tail with red side patches. The male has a red throat edged with a narrow black and broad white border.

This migratory species breeds in Siberia and winters in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
