German for "swimming car". The common nickname for the Volkwagen Type 128/Type 166, an amphibious automobile developed by Ferdinand Porsche for the German armed forces in World War II. The Schwimmwagen was based on the Kübelwagen, a military utility vehicle that was in turn based on the VW Type 1 (later to become world-famous as the Beetle).
