red guard

A Chinese Communist volunteer paramilitary organization founded during the era of Mao Zedong in China. Their attire consists of a mao cap, green simplified military uniform with a red collar, a red armband, a red scarf, and often holding "the red book" containing various quotes from Mao Zedong himself.

Prevalent during the Cultural Revolution period of China, as they were usually involved in enforcing the "standardization" of Chinese culture.
