orion (star trek)
A fictional humanoid alien race from the Star Trek series. Known for their green skin. Originated in the pilot of the original series with an exotic dancer dubbed the 'Orion Animal Woman'.
Once a technologically advanced species of explorers and traders, the Orions eventually devolved into one of the most notorious races of pirates and slavers. The Orion Syndicate was known and feared widely as one of the preeminent organized crime organizations, and much of their culture became centered around it.
Notable quirks of the Orions are their matriarchal society and the potent pheromones Orion females produce. In some cases, female leaders conceal their identity and allow themselves to be trafficked, using these pheromones to compromise rival organizations. In other cases, female Orions in mixed species populations (like Starfleet) have had to take measures to control this trait to fit in.
