kanagawa okinami ura

神奈川沖浪裏 かながわおきなみうら

The Great Wave off Kanagawa (lit. Under the Wave off Kanagawa) is an 1831 woodblock print by ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai. It depicts three boats in the midst of a stormy sea, with a large, cresting wave forming a spiral in the center over the boats and Mount Fuji in the background.

It is the best-known of Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji. Because it has become an iconic representation of Japanese art, the motif is frequently used in modern works where it tends to impart a sort of "traditional" feel.
