jiraiya gouketsu monogatari

児雷也豪傑譚

(じらいやごうけつものがたり, "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya")

A long-running, unfinished 19th century kusazoushi novel series written by Mizugaki Egao and his inheritor authors. Illustrated by seven ukiyo-e artists, including Utagawa Kunisada.

Kawatake Mokuami wrote a kabuki drama based on the first ten parts of the novel.

Although the toad-riding thief Jiraiya first appeared in Kan'wa-tei Onitake's Jiraiya Monogatari, Mizugaki's Gouketsu Monogatari is regarded as a great popularizer of Jiraiya's name. His archnemesis, Orochimaru, and his wife, Tsunade, originated from this series.

Characters

  • Jiraiya, aka. Ogata Shuuma Hiroyuki
  • Tsunade, aka. Ogata Tsunade
  • Orochimaru
  • NARUTO - Some characters' names and one of the episode titles originated from the novel.
