Former General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (1989—2002) and Paramount leader (1989—2004).
Has become a recurring meme within the Chinese internet community, mainly due to his eccentric behavior and his role on the Chinese media censorship (particularly his role duing the Tiananmen Square protests).
He is usually being referred to as "Elder Jiang" and is depicted as a sort of "The Big Brother" character who watches over the internet and supposedly punish anyone who is "crossing the line". Though he is later remembered fondly for the relatively loosened control over the people, especially during the era of Xi Jinping.
Jiang Zemin passed away on November 30, 2022 after complications from leukemia.
