A small bird of prey. Males have lightly barred underparts, dark grey upperparts, dark barred underwings and red eyes. Females have yellow eyes and more heavily barred underparts.
Japanese sparrowhawks breed in China, Japan, Korea and Siberia; they migrate to Indonesia and the Philippines during winter.
