In 1948, Japan introduced three (later four) public holidays during this week, making it a "golden time" for high recreational activity. It has since been further commercialized with promotional events and sales.
In 2021, artists began a trend of drawing characters in gold bikinis during Golden Week (beginning with Danbooru post #4494511).
