giving up the ghost
The visual gag of a character's spirit visibly rising out of or otherwise leaving their body, such as through their mouth. Often used for comedic effect when a character is overwhelmed, exhausted, frightened, defeated, rendered unconscious, etc., but can also appear in actual death scenarios.
May also be used for inanimate objects that have been broken, ruined, etc..
