folding stock

A firearm buttstock that can be folded while not in use, reducing the weapon's overall length for easier storage or transport. It usually utilizes a hinged attachment to the receiver.

It is a prominent feature of modern small arms design. Most folding stocks fold to the side, while few models fold to the top (e.g. SPAS-12) or bottom (e.g. MP40).
