charcoal (medium)
Similar in practice to graphite, charcoal as a medium is distinct in that it produces much darker, fuller blacks. The caveats of this come from it being less hard and more brittle (on average) than its grey cousin. This softness belies a certain abrasive quality that produced rougher lines, and care must be taken that it not smudge.
