battle standard

A general term for any type of flag carried by soldiers into battle to show their allegiance. Narrow it down to war flag if the fabric is horizontally oriented or war banner if it hangs vertically.

If the flag is being used in a military context but not carried by infantry/cavalry (such as on warships), simply tag the relevant country's flag.
