An animated movie written and directed by Shinkai Makoto, released on August 26th 2016 in Japan.
The story involves a boy and a girl from different timelines who communicate tenuously through dreamlike episodes of mutual possession. The story has been compared to others such as Kokoro Connect and keit-ai.
A critical success, its box office revenue exceeded 10 billion yen. It has become the first non-Ghibli non-series based anime movie to do so. As of January 2017, it has become the highest-grossing anime film worldwide, surpassing Spirited Away, although it is still behind in Japan proper.
